The Rolling Stones - ALWAYS SUFFERING (Bridges To Babylon)

(Jagger/Richards)

Let's take a walk
Just you and me
And talk of days gone by
Across the fields
Under the trees
Let's speak of you and I

While the whole world
Was wandering
We walked a steady line
When all our friends
Were wavering
We kept on trying

Now we're always suffering
Already lost
Always suffering
Already lost

Remember when
On summer days
I would sing a lovers son
How you would smile
Shower me with praise
And the sun shined on

Now the rain is falling slow
And the nights grow long
And the train
Cries out so hauntingly
She is gone

Now we're always suffering
Already lost
We're always suffering
Already lost

Please take these flowers
Smell the perfume
Let your soul come alive
Let there be hope
Hope in your heart
That our love may revive

For life is but a chance
On a wind swept hill
And the seeds of love
Are swirling above
Let them be still

But we're always suffering
We're already lost
Always suffering
Already lost

yes the supremes sang many pop stuff but it had often soun and R&B influence not only in the song but also in the lyrics but they also had some R&B sounding stuff like "going down for the third time" or "love is like an itching in my heart" or "come see about me" or "my world is empty without you" in my opinion :)

This song to me is a masterpiece , Don't get mad because Motown went after the White Folk Dollar. They have been gettin' our money for decades. If you were the President of Motown YOU would want to make as much money as possible as well.

@ProudKansan08 I also heard or read somewhere that Florence's voice sounded too soulful (i.e., black), whereas Diana Ross on lead vocals could sell more records, since cross-over to a white audience was the goal.

Your information is incorrect. Flo may have wanted to be lead singer, but the truth is that all three girls shared lead without much success. Once they hit number one with Where Did Our Love Go with Ross singing lead, Gordy decided to keep Ross as the lead. HDH concurred and wrote songs specifically for Ross' voice. Gordy and Ross didn't start their affair until 1965. By that time The Supremes, with Ross as lead singer, had several #1 hits.

In my opinion the Supremes were sometimes more pop than r&b. The drums, heel stops, hand claps! To me this song an "Run Run Run" are rock n roll pop songs. This song is as pop as the Beatles "Eight Days A Week".
